Your Plan B / Knowledge

Asset protection your family can actually use

If war, political repression or the possibility of state interference is driving your decision, identify the exposure precisely. Which assets, institutions, people and jurisdictions does your family depend on? That is the starting point for a lawful structure and a usable alternative.

When money exists but you cannot use it

A lost phone, a bank's decision to close an account and a legal freeze require different responses. Losing the device calls for authorised recovery. A closure calls for the account's contractual and complaint route, alongside continuity of payments. A court or sanctions restriction calls for the competent legal process.

Start with the bills that keep life functioning: accommodation, food, treatment, school and the business expenses that sustain income. Record which account pays each one, who may instruct payment and what would happen if that account became unavailable today. A property sale or an investment redemption that takes time is a different resource from an immediately usable reserve.

Keep ownership, authority and practical access separate

Family asset protection works only when three questions have answers. Who owns it? That is established by the relevant register, contract or legal arrangement. Who may act? That depends on the account mandate, company powers or other recognised authority. How will they act? That requires accepted identification, usable communications and the institution's procedure.

A spouse who knows where an account is held may still lack authority to operate it. A person with authority may still be unable to receive the authentication message. Record these as separate dependencies so that the legal work and the technical setup meet in a procedure the intended person can use.

Build payment continuity before changing residence

Two cards attached to the same account do not remove dependence on that account. Look at the underlying institution, available payment methods, currencies, device and recovery channel. A useful reserve covers the period your family may need to live through while an interrupted payment route is resolved.

Moving abroad also changes the bank's customer-service question. Confirm whether the precise legal bank entity will continue your product at your genuine destination address. Then establish the documents, transfer limits, beneficiary setup and access arrangements needed for the alternative. Work through the banking and payment-continuity guide before treating an account abroad as ready to use.

EXOBASIS can organise the agreed banking-access and liquidity work: gather the required records, coordinate the provider process and connect the accepted arrangement to your family's payments. Include recovery after losing your phone or email in the same preparation.

Choose the structure for the problem it must solve

International asset protection can involve a transfer, a legal structure, separate custody or a change in who can act. These are different jobs. Match the arrangement to ownership, access, succession, tax treatment and the costs of keeping it functioning.

  • Transfers: establish the purpose, source of funds, receiving requirements, currency and timing before moving capital.
  • Trusts or foundations: establish who will control decisions, who can benefit, the governing law, reporting and tax treatment, and the ongoing administration.
  • Tangible assets: identify the custodian, ownership evidence, insurance, release procedure and the person's ability to collect or realise the asset.
  • Property abroad: connect the purchase to the family's actual use, local title and purchase checks, funding, succession and maintenance while absent. Keep accessible reserves alongside the property commitment.

If you are considering asset protection in Dubai, start with your actual residence history and the assets involved. In particular, a former UK resident may retain UK inheritance-tax exposure after moving. A structure's address does not answer that question.

State access, capital controls and tax proposals

Concern about protecting assets from government needs a defined legal question: a tax charge, an enforcement measure, a sanctions restriction or a limit on moving capital. Identify the authority, the assets and people covered, commencement dates and any recognised review or appeal route. Assess alternatives before taking an irreversible step; an offshore label does not determine how a court or tax authority will treat ownership or control.

Treat a proposed UK wealth tax and an enacted liability as different planning inputs. For a proposal, record what legislative step would change your decision. For an existing duty, organise compliance and any lawful challenge around the actual deadline. This keeps contingency planning tied to evidence rather than a predicted date of confiscation.

UK policy watch: the digital pound, 5 October 2026

The Bank of England's digital-pound project page describes a design phase and states that a decision to introduce a digital pound has not been made. Its proposed model would sit alongside cash; the Bank says proposed safeguards would protect privacy and prevent the Bank or government from controlling how users spend it. Under that proposed model, a private wallet provider would still require identity information and have a commercial relationship with the user; the Bank and government would not see personal spending data. Those are stated design commitments, not enacted terms of a live product.

Follow the Bank's decision and legislative updates as this develops. Meanwhile, reducing dependence on one institution, one phone or one authorised person is work you can undertake now. Include relevant policy changes in ongoing preparation reviews.

Make sure the right person can act without you

If you make every financial decision, the family's vulnerability may be your absence rather than the location of its assets. Name the tasks another person must perform: paying essential bills, receiving official correspondence, instructing a professional, managing the business or arranging care.

Have the appropriate instrument prepared for each legal system and obtain the relevant institution's requirements for using it. Keep the document, the acceptance process and the practical access arrangements together. The guide to powers, representation and succession abroad explains that connection. A shared password is not a substitute for authority.

Commission the work that closes your actual gap

You may already know that you need a second payment route, a property-related transfer or a succession arrangement. That work can be commissioned directly. Where several exposures overlap, EXOBASIS puts the facts and dependencies together, organises the necessary specialist assessment and carries out the agreed preparation.

The asset structures, custody and succession service connects professional decisions to records, applications, provider coordination and handover. Start by describing the dependency you want to reduce and the outcome your family needs. Detailed holdings and account records belong in the protected follow-up.
