Your Plan B / Knowledge
Leaving the UAE: prepare your departure and keep a usable return option
Leaving the UAE can mean ending your life there, spending a longer period elsewhere or preparing somewhere your family could go if war disrupts normal travel. Each calls for a different sequence. Cancelling the arrangements that support you today can close a return option you meant to keep.
Your departure plan needs to connect residence, dependants, final salary, bank access and your first address abroad. Start with the decisions that change those arrangements, while you still have time to make them in the right order.
Leaving Dubai permanently, temporarily or for a second base?
For a permanent departure, the work centres on ending or transferring your UAE commitments and establishing the next place to live. For a temporary absence, it centres on keeping your status, home and essential services usable. A parallel second base combines a prepared place abroad with the continuing obligations of your UAE life.

| Your intention | What must be ready | What you retain or close |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent departure | Destination entry and residence, accommodation, payment access and a timetable for dependants. | Employment, sponsorship, tenancy and bank products dealt with through their respective processes. |
| Extended absence | A permitted period away and a workable journey back for every traveller. | The sponsor or qualifying basis, permit validity and any required renewals. |
| A prepared second base | Lawful entry, a usable address, initial funds and care at the alternative location. | The UAE arrangements needed for the return you actually intend. |
Nationality is a separate fact. A British citizen, an Indian citizen and an EU citizen living in the same Dubai building may have very different destination rights. Record the passport and residence position of each family member, including a partner or older relative who depends on your sponsorship.

A different current country of residence
Choose the guide for the country you are preparing to leave.
Residence, sponsorship and absence: keep the clocks separate
The UAE Government describes a general rule under which a resident who remains outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days loses the validity of that residence visa, with specified exceptions. Golden Visa holders can stay outside the country for more than the usual six months. That exception belongs to the qualifying residence category; a family plan must establish the category held by each person.

Permit expiry, an absence limit and the period allowed to remain after cancellation answer different questions. A cancellation grace period concerns your lawful stay after the status ends. It does not extend a right to return from abroad. Ask the issuing authority to confirm the relevant dates against the actual permit: GDRFA for Dubai, or the applicable ICP route for other emirates.
Employment-linked residence also has a sponsor sequence. The official cancellation process says a sponsor must cancel the residence visas of sponsored dependants before cancelling their own. Set out any alternative status for the family before initiating those cancellations. Changing job, closing a company and keeping a self-sponsored residence are different cases.
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Passport, permit category and issuing authority | Establishes which entry, absence and renewal rules apply. |
| Sponsor and dependant relationship | Shows whose status change could affect somebody else. |
| Expiry, absence and cancellation dates | Prevents one deadline from being mistaken for another. |
| Intended return date and confirmation | Makes a return option an explicit part of the plan. |
Keep final salary, banking and continuing bills connected
Before leaving the UAE permanently, reconcile your final employment payment, borrowing, tenancy, utilities, school commitments and company responsibilities. Obtain the statements, settlement figures and contract notices while you can still deal with the organisations involved. Keep the money for ongoing bills available until those obligations end.
A gratuity credited to your account is not necessarily money you can immediately spend. Emirates NBD says end-of-service benefits may be restricted against personal loans or other liabilities. Its published credit-card treatment is a separate mechanism. A restriction on the gratuity, a reduced card limit and a frozen account have different consequences.

The same bank publishes a separate non-resident process: a current account can be converted to a savings account; where both types exist, the current account is closed and the savings account remains. The required paperwork depends on the relationship. Obtain your own bank’s written requirements and arrange an accessible, funded payment route before relying on the final payment for flights or a housing deposit.
The detailed banking and payments guide separates these UAE cases from UK account closures. Your immigration status, the bank’s customer record and tax residence also need separate, accurate updates.

Travel restrictions and children: settle the case before the airport
A potential travel ban needs an answer from the authority responsible for that particular case. The FCDO explains that UAE financial disputes, unpaid bills, litigation and family proceedings can lead to travel restrictions. Paying a disputed sum and having a restriction formally lifted are separate events.

Start with the emirate, the case reference and the type of proceedings. A Dubai Police enquiry concerning financial cases covers that service’s scope; it does not clear every civil, criminal, immigration or family matter across all emirates. For a known or suspected restriction, instruct a UAE legal specialist to establish the competent court, prosecution or other authority, resolve the required action and obtain confirmation that the restriction has been lifted. Recheck before travel.
For children, confirm parental authority, required consent and any court orders separately from passports and flight bookings. A parent’s ability to travel does not decide whether a child can accompany them. Arrange any necessary legal consent before making the journey executable; the family travel guide explains the related UK and UAE questions.
School transfer documents, medical summaries and medication arrangements then need to travel with the family. If a carer or relative will accompany someone, include that person’s entry rights and responsibilities in the same itinerary.

Have somewhere to arrive, and decide what brings you back
Choose the first address around the people who will use it. A furnished rental can bridge arrival and a longer search. Confirm the dates, occupants, cancellation terms, deposit, access to keys and a contact who can resolve a problem when you land. For a family with ongoing treatment, proximity to a suitable provider may matter more than a preferred neighbourhood.
If buying a home is the longer-term goal, separate the property decision from permission to live there. EXOBASIS can organise a needs-led search, viewings, independent local title and purchase review, the contractual steps, handover and care of the property while you are away. The acquisition must fit your destination rights, funding and intended use; a purchase itself does not answer every immigration question.
For a retained UAE base, name who handles the home, post, renewals and practical problems during your absence. Put each person’s return conditions beside the destination arrangements. Revisit the plan after a sponsorship, passport, employment or family change. You can commission EXOBASIS to review and maintain these preparations, with agreed checks of documents, residence conditions and local arrangements, and follow-up when they change.
If regional escalation disrupts flights, use a predetermined decision point to reassess whether the booked route still operates, every traveller can enter and transit, and your accommodation is ready. When those conditions change, take current instructions from the authorities and carrier before changing route.
