Your Plan B / Countries / Europe
Prepare a Swiss alternative your family can use
Moving to Switzerland from the UK or UAE: connect residence rights, Zurich or Nyon, housing, school, healthcare and usable money with practical preparation. EXOBASIS organises the agreed work, from documents and housing search to a prepared arrival.
Your starting point
Switzerland can serve as a European family home, an intermittently used base or a location for a separate financial-service assignment. These uses need different preparation. For a UK-based family, the short geographical distance may make exploratory visits and return journeys practical. For a household in the UAE, the journey and the arrangements left behind require their own sequence.
- A second baseA home for regular stays, with suitable rights, reliable access and care while you are away.
- A new place to liveBring housing, school, healthcare and income together into a workable family routine.
- A prepared alternativeArrange travel, accommodation and the necessary steps early enough to turn an idea into a usable plan.
What matters for your decision
Start with the rights you actually hold. A returning Swiss citizen, an EU/EFTA citizen living in Dubai, a British citizen with protected pre-2021 Swiss rights and a new British applicant are different cases. An EU residence permit held by a third-country national does not grant Swiss work permission. Within one household, spouses, children and dependent parents may follow different routes.
The useful comparison therefore connects immigration, the home, healthcare, school and how you earn and spend money. Swiss banking can be worthwhile for a particular purpose even when your family's chosen living base is somewhere else.
If war, the threat of war or growing loss of control is making you prepare another place to live, Switzerland deserves a practical assessment. Your family needs permission to stay, a home it can use, continuing care and money that works when you need it. A Swiss account or property addresses only part of that task.
EXOBASIS brings the residence work, location choice, housing, arrival and continuing arrangements together. You can also commission a defined banking, document or property assignment without first buying a broader planning service.

Contingency base and return
Fear of war is a reason to prepare before your choices narrow. It does not establish that a particular flight, border or home will be available later. Switzerland remains within Europe's transport and supply environment. Moving there can change your immediate circumstances without removing exposure to a Europe-wide crisis.
Travel and local preparedness in detail
- Get the household there
- Match each person's documents and rights to entry, transit and the intended stay. Compare the actual route from the UK or UAE and an alternative that does not depend on the same transport bottleneck. Keep funds, accommodation and essential treatment available if departure is delayed.
- Make the home usable
- Confirm the right to occupy it, keys and handover, utilities, initial supplies and the person receiving the family. Imported goods, medicines and energy-related services belong in the continuity plan. Consider what an interruption to European transport, electricity or communications would mean for heating, medical equipment, refrigerated medication and digital payments.
- Preserve a way back
- Decide what stays available in the UK or UAE: residence rights, housing, employment, business responsibilities and care. A Swiss permission does not maintain a non-British relative's UK status or a UAE residence permit. Those retained arrangements need their own absence and expiry checks.
A care-dependent relative needs more than an arrival address. Zurich has a documented route into Spitex assessment; Nyon has CMS Nyon and CMS24 for home-care intake. Prepare the clinical records, suitable transport, daily support and the receiving handover before relying on the Swiss home. Hospital emergency access is a different function from an agreed care arrangement.
Check the final journey to the property as well. Flood exposure, surface water, winter access and weather-sensitive routes can affect whether a particular address is useful. Zurich and Vaud provide their own natural-hazard mapping; the maps support an address-level assessment rather than a claim of safety from war.

A lasting future for your family
A family move is more than the main applicant's permit
An EU/EFTA citizen who is not working needs adequate resources for the household and appropriate health and accident insurance. The family route can include a spouse, children or grandchildren under 21 or dependent descendants, and dependent parents or grandparents. Relationship and existing dependency must be evidenced, alongside suitable family housing. Students have a narrower family category. An accompanying relative's different passport is part of the case, not a detail to deal with after arrival.
Residence and family life in detail
For third-country families, the main person's permit matters. Spouses and unmarried children under 18 of C-permit holders have a conditional entitlement under Article 43 of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act; B-permit cases under Article 44 are discretionary, while L has its own conditions. Shared residence, suitable accommodation, financial conditions and the applicable language requirement need attention. For initial permission, enrolment in a language course may meet the specified language step; children under 18 are exempt from that requirement. The general reunification period is five years, reduced to twelve months for children over twelve, from the legally applicable starting point. Later applications require the relevant exception.
In the Article 42-44 family cases, spouses and children can work; do not apply that statement indiscriminately to L-permit families. A dependent elderly parent also needs the appropriate route rather than an assumption that all relatives can join. If a British acquired-rights case is involved, the historic position and family dates must be established; the transition for future spouses ended on 31 December 2025.

Choose the canton around an ordinary week
Zurich's public-school route is German-speaking and tied to your residential address. Nyon, in Vaud, is French-speaking and uses the local school authority with assessment for French-language support. English at work does not make either public system an English-language curriculum. In the Nyon area, Ecolint in Founex provides a separate private bilingual option with its own application, fees and school journey.
Build the family budget from the actual home: rent and running costs, insurance for each person, childcare or school costs, journeys, treatment and any daily care. For someone who needs help at home, the property's access and the receiving provider's start date may decide the location before tax preferences do. Choose the address around the relative who would be most affected by disruption. Essential treatment, medication and daily help must remain accessible if local power or the usual access route fails, either at home or through an agreed alternative. If that cannot be arranged, rule out the property as your family base rather than trading care continuity for a lower tax bill.
Resolve parental authority and permission for the move in the family's present jurisdiction. A Swiss school application does not settle a UK relocation-consent question or a UAE child-travel restriction. The two pieces of work must come together before the journey.

Mobile living
Part-year living works only if the intended visits, work and absences fit your actual status. A lease gives you the agreed use of a home; it does not create immigration permission. Buying a holiday property is also different from living in a home as your genuine principal residence.
Absence can end a permission before the card expires
Under the standard FNIA rules, deregistering for departure abroad ends the permit. Without deregistration, an L short-stay permit expires after three months abroad; B residence and C settlement permits after six months. A C permit can be maintained for four years on application. Obtain the decision before treating a long absence as compatible with the Swiss base.
Protected British acquired-rights cases have a separate position: SEM describes loss of protected L/B status after more than six months abroad without deregistration. Deregistering abroad ends the acquired position; returning later does not revive it. EU/EFTA free-movement cases must be assessed under their own applicable rules rather than assigned the standard L limit.
Work and tax follow what you actually do
Running your business, working remotely or serving clients from Switzerland needs the correct activity assessment before work begins. Under the third-country regime, work authorisation is required regardless of the activity's duration; the employer applies for an employee at the intended place of work. The retirement route for third-country applicants aged 55 or over excludes gainful activity both in Switzerland and abroad, apart from managing personal assets.
Use and absences in detail
Swiss tax residence may arise from living there with the intention of remaining. The additional 30-day threshold with work and 90-day threshold without work are not tax-free allowances for mobile residents. Record actual homes, presence and work, and have the Swiss position considered alongside continuing UK, UAE or other-country ties.
If you want to keep returning to the UAE, use Leaving the UAE or preparing a second option to connect the retained permit, family sponsorship and bank arrangements. For a UK return, Leaving the UK with a prepared alternative distinguishes citizenship from an immigration permission. Meanwhile, someone must maintain the Swiss home, correspondence, bills and arrival arrangements.

Existing rights and suitable routes
Use existing rights before seeking a new route
Establish Swiss citizenship, any continuing Swiss permit, EU/EFTA nationality or protected British rights first. A second passport can change the route, but it must be an actual citizenship you hold. Living in the UK or UAE does not tell us which of these rights applies.
Requirements and procedures in detail
- EU/EFTA employment: a Swiss job lasting up to three months in the calendar year generally uses the notification procedure. For longer employment, register with the municipality and apply for the permit within 14 days of arrival and before starting work. Prepare a passport or identity card and written employment evidence stating duration and hours. An employment contract under a year generally points to L; one year or more, or an indefinite contract, to B.
- EU/EFTA self-employment: register within 14 days and demonstrate genuine self-employment and sufficient support for yourself and your family. Activity starts only after the canton has received the documents it requires.
- EU/EFTA without work: apply through the municipality within 14 days. The household needs sufficient means without social-assistance dependence and appropriate health and accident insurance, coordinated with any applicable international insurance rules.
- Family members: establish the qualifying relationship, dependency where relevant and suitable housing. Spouses and children admitted under the EU/EFTA family route can work irrespective of their nationality. Third-country B, C and L family cases retain their separate rules.
A new British arrival or another third-country applicant
New British arrivals since 1 January 2021 without acquired rights fall under the third-country regime. A job offer alone does not authorise moving in to start work. The employer's application and admission come first, with qualifications, priority for suitable domestic or EU/EFTA labour, quotas and locally customary pay and working conditions considered. This generally addresses managers, specialists and other qualified workers. Self-employment also requires a viable financial and operational basis and an independent livelihood. Registering a company does not substitute for admission.
An EU residence permit held by a third-country national does not grant Swiss work authorisation. Nor is the short Swiss-employment notification procedure for EU/EFTA citizens generally available to a new British employee. The person's passport, activity and admission determine the subsequent entry and visa work.
Retirement is a defined case, not a wealth-based remote-work permission
For a third-country applicant aged at least 55, retirement admission can be considered where there are special personal ties to Switzerland, sufficient means and no gainful activity in Switzerland or abroad. Longer previous stays or close ties to near relatives can be relevant to those personal connections. Owning property or being wealthy is not enough. Managing your own assets remains permitted.
A British pre-2021 position is different again. It depends on rights actually acquired before the end of 2020 and retained under the agreement. The personal cantonal record, absences and family dates establish what remains usable; a British passport by itself does not.
Match the route to the way you intend to use Switzerland
Existing rights, missing requirements and the work to put in place
Open the use that fits your plans. Each option brings together the legal requirements, your documents and the work to commission.
Intended use: Contingency base and return
- Existing rights
- Swiss citizenship, a continuing Swiss permit, EU/EFTA rights whose conditions are met or a retained British acquired-rights position may already provide the basis. Each traveller's valid entry or residence basis defines the usable stay; retained UK, UAE or other return rights are assessed separately.
- Requirements to secure
- Evidence, notification or registration appropriate to the existing right; a new admission or visitor basis only where that right does not cover the intended stay. A home available for use, suitable cover, medicines and accessible funds; check absence effects on existing permits.
- Practical work
- Prepare the journey and alternative, keys, initial care and payments, while preserving the arrangements needed for return.
Intended use: Lasting family home
- Existing rights
- Swiss citizenship, a valid Swiss permit, qualifying EU/EFTA rights and retained British acquired rights are existing positions. A new British, other third-country or family application is not yet an issued permission.
- Requirements to secure
- Document existing rights and complete their notification or registration steps; obtain any missing permission for a new British, other third-country or family case. As applicable: employment or self-employment evidence, or resources and insurance, family documents, suitable housing and local school and care intake.
- Practical work
- Connect applications, the address, teaching language, treatment, household funding and the move in a workable sequence.
Intended use: Mobile use
- Existing rights
- The continuing permission and its absence and re-entry conditions set the framework. A banking relationship is not a residence right. Swiss citizens do not need a residence permit; EU/EFTA and protected British cases follow their respective legal rules.
- Requirements to secure
- Permitted work for each stay, an appropriate rental or acquisition case, tax assessment and any permission-maintenance decision before a long absence.
- Practical work
- Maintain the travel record, home, correspondence, payment access and next arrival; follow changes in work and family circumstances.
EXOBASIS establishes what is already in place, organises the missing records and carries through the agreed practical work with the relevant institutions. You can begin with one defined task.

Regions and housing
Zurich: a German-speaking home linked to the school district
Compare real homes in the city against the household's work, school and care journeys. An address in the Uto school district brings its school authority into the registration process. Allocation follows the address and other criteria, not an automatic choice of the closest or preferred school. Children arriving with little German can be assessed for German-as-a-second-language support.
For a relative needing home care, check the entrance, lift, bathroom and journey to treatment before committing to the property. Spitex Zurich's assessment establishes the support required. The budget must include rent and additional charges, insurance for each person, childcare and meals, travel and any care or household help paid privately. The actual municipality also matters to the tax calculation.

Nyon: French-language public schooling, with Founex as a separate private option
For a home in Nyon, school registration goes to the school leadership serving the residential location. Nyon Léman, whose secretariat is at Chemin de Prélaz 5, is a specific contact point; establish the appropriate allocation for your address. French-language support, the school run and childcare belong beside the rental decision. Connect medical journeys to Hôpital de Nyon and any home-care intake through CMS Nyon.
If private bilingual schooling suits the children better, Ecolint La Châtaigneraie at Chemin de la Ferme 2 in Founex has its own application. A Nyon address and a Founex school are not the same location: compare the daily return journey, admission stage and full school budget for every home considered. Public schooling in French and a private bilingual curriculum are different financial and educational choices.
Renting: application, deposit and handover
Expect a housing application covering occupation, income, household size, nationality or residence permission and employer. A debt-enforcement-register extract is frequently requested. As a newcomer without a Swiss register history, agree suitable supplementary evidence with the actual landlord or management company rather than assuming an overseas record will be accepted.
The landlord or agent selects the tenant. Review the lease, house rules, additional charges and commencement date before signing. An agreed security deposit is limited to three months' rent and placed in a rental-deposit account in the tenant's name. Record the condition, including minor defects, at handover. Deposit money is tied up; keep the first rent and other arrival payments available separately.
Buying: establish your Lex Koller case before committing
EU/EFTA citizens lawfully and actually resident in Switzerland are generally not treated as persons abroad under Lex Koller. For other foreign nationals, a C settlement permit is particularly relevant; protected British positions have their own pre-2021 connection. Other foreign residents can in specified circumstances acquire a genuine principal home in their own name at their lawful place of residence without acquisition authorisation. It must be for their own occupation, not already intended for letting to someone else. A residence permit and municipal registration alone do not establish the actual centre of personal life for this purpose.
Property rules and preparation in detail
A holiday property does not use that principal-home exemption. For a person abroad, a holiday-home purchase depends on cantonal permission, an authorised tourist location, any quota and the property's use conditions. It cannot be assumed available in Zurich or Nyon. Where the land registry cannot clearly rule out the authorisation requirement, the cantonal acquisition authority decides. Required authorisation must be final before completion and registration.
Commissioned purchase work can include the search, viewings, independent local title and encumbrance checks, financing and contract coordination, completion and possession. Buying the property and obtaining permission to live in it remain distinct requirements.
Keep completion costs separate from the purchase price and mortgage funding. For a Zurich property, the competent notarial office also acts as the land registry and charges distinct notarisation and land-registration or transfer fees. Actual disbursements are additional. The notarisation fee attracts VAT; the land-registration transfer fee is VAT-exempt. Zurich does not charge a property transfer tax. By law, buyer and seller owe equal shares of the fees and are jointly and severally liable, so either can be called on for the other's share. A contract can change the final allocation between them without removing their liability to the office.
For a home in Nyon, budget separately for the notary's work under the Vaud tariff and disbursements, the registration fee at the competent La Côte land registry in Tolochenaz, and cantonal and municipal property transfer tax. The municipal element follows the current tax resolution for the property's location: choosing a school in Founex does not turn a Nyon purchase into a Founex tax case. Unless agreed otherwise, the buyer bears the transfer deed's notarial costs and the transfer tax on an ordinary purchase. Both parties remain jointly and severally liable to the notary and tax authority respectively. The person requesting registration owes the registry fee, which excludes disbursements. Match each item to the cost allocation agreed in the purchase contract.
Creating or increasing security over the property can add notarial and registry charges, but only if that step is actually needed. Additional advice separately commissioned from a Vaud notary is billed apart from the tariff-governed purchase work. Ordinary preparation and follow-up for the deed do not automatically constitute a second advisory assignment.
Inspect the property as a working base
Use the Zurich or Vaud natural-hazard maps for the actual plot, entrance and access route. Check winter access, heating, power, communications and everyday journeys during the viewing process. For remote work or medical equipment, identify how an interruption would be handled rather than relying on a general impression of Swiss infrastructure. If care relies on powered equipment or refrigerated medication, agree a workable backup with the relevant professionals before committing to the home. If its usual access road becomes unusable, you need another way to reach replacement care or suitable temporary accommodation. Without that route, the property does not meet the household's needs.

Schooling, healthcare and care
Children and relatives
In Zurich, register the move and actual address so the relevant school authority can arrange allocation. The Uto district uses the appropriate registration form for kindergarten/primary or secondary entry. The initial parent discussion identifies language-support needs; DaZ, German as a second language, supports children who arrive with little German. Lunch and out-of-school care require separate registration and payment.
School, health and family in detail
In Nyon, compulsory schooling starts in the year a child is four by 31 July. Public schooling is free. Register with the school leadership at the place of residence using the family record or a valid passport and an insurance certificate or card. Vaud assesses placement from school records, existing knowledge and age. A mainstream class with intensive French and a reception class are different possible responses; Le Rocher also operates reception classes.
Ecolint La Châtaigneraie in Founex offers a private alternative: bilingual IB-PYP primary education and English, French or bilingual secondary pathways. Its online application asks for age-appropriate records including a photograph, birth evidence and the last two years' school reports plus the current report. The published application fee is CHF 250. Securing a place follows an offer, a signed contract and payment of the registration and capital-development fees. Tuition, additional support and transport need their own current offer.
School arrangements must fit the child's immigration and family position. Prepare to move abroad with children and family connects education with parental responsibility, travel and relocation consent, and relatives who remain behind. Those questions need the family's actual UK or UAE legal context.
Insurance and treatment
On taking up residence, compulsory health insurance generally needs to be arranged within three months, separately for every family member. If you enrol on time, cover and premiums run retrospectively from the start of residence. Late enrolment begins cover only from the enrolment date and can trigger a premium surcharge where the delay is unjustified. Budget for the retrospective premiums rather than treating the first three months as free cover.
School, health and family in detail
Approved basic insurers must accept people subject to compulsory insurance irrespective of age or health, without reservations or waiting periods. Supplementary insurance is a different contract: health questions, exclusions and refusal are possible. Match the chosen insurance model, treatment needs and patient-paid costs to the actual household.
International coordination can change the responsible country for an eligible EU/EFTA, UK or Swiss case. Within the applicable pension rules, someone receiving only an EU/EFTA or UK pension is generally insured in that state. If a Swiss pension is also received, Swiss insurance generally applies regardless of the size of that pension. The Common Institution under the KVG establishes the individual's position. UAE residence or an existing overseas policy is not a general exemption from Swiss insurance.
Continuing treatment still needs an accepting practice, clinical records and access to the medication prescribed. In Zurich, the University Hospital's general emergency department at Schmelzbergstrasse 8 is open around the clock. The canton-wide Ärztefon on 0800 33 66 55 directs medical emergencies; 144 is the emergency ambulance number. Hôpital de Nyon's adult emergency department is also open around the clock. Paediatric and scheduled specialist care follow their own service routes.
Health cover and care abroad explains the difference between the responsible insurance system, the cover purchased and treatment you can actually obtain.
Home care and a complete handover
Spitex Zurich accepts registration from individuals, relatives, medical practices or institutions. A professional then assesses nursing, domestic and support needs and helps establish payment arrangements. In Nyon, Fondation de La Côte operates CMS Nyon; CMS24 provides a concrete home-care intake route, with the contact +41 848 267 247 listed by GHOL.
School, health and family in detail
Before moving a care-dependent relative, agree the start of care, daily and night-time support, medication, equipment, access to the home and payment responsibilities. The receiving care team and relatives must also agree before the move which help and medication must continue if visits, deliveries or power are interrupted, who will carry out the agreed steps and which replacement care is reachable. Record the responsible contact and how to reach that alternative so a relative can act when the usual arrangement fails. EXOBASIS can organise the records, accommodation and arrival work and coordinate the handover between existing and receiving providers. The guide Care needs, medication and medical dependencies when moving connects that work to transport and continuing supply.

Income, money and work
Income and permission to work
Calculate the household's available income and funds after existing commitments. Rent, insurance for each person, school or childcare, care, travel and tax belong in one working budget. Evidence of wealth may support a qualifying non-working residence case; it does not make a payment unless the money is actually available.
EU/EFTA employment requires the applicable notification or registration and permit steps before starting; self-employment requires the requested evidence of genuine activity. A new British or other third-country employee needs the employer's admission process, including qualifications, labour priority, quotas and customary pay and working conditions. The Swiss location of the activity matters even if the company, client or salary account is elsewhere. The third-country retirement route excludes continuing gainful work.
Swiss banking: eligibility before reliance
PostFinance's personal account in CHF is a documented payment-account option within its packages, with a debit card, e-finance/app, payments and standing orders. Its public opening requirements include adulthood and residence in Switzerland. Identification is completed at a PostFinance or Swiss Post branch, or by video. The separately published CHF 25 monthly charge per account for domicile abroad is not the total package price and does not establish a general right for non-residents to open a new account.
Work, income and payments in detail
First confirm the applicant's residence, customer status and product acceptance, including the bank's requested tax and source-of-funds records. Then complete identification, fund the accepted account and test the intended payments. Keep existing banking working until the replacement can pay the actual rent, deposit, insurance and family expenses.
For a UK departure, ask whether your present bank will continue the particular product at your real Swiss address. For a UAE departure, final salary or an end-of-service payment, outstanding borrowing, residence updates and the bank's non-resident treatment are separate issues. Do not make the Swiss arrival dependent on money that has not become available. The origin guides Leaving the UK with a prepared alternative and Leaving the UAE or preparing a second option put those steps in their proper country context.
Debanking, a closure notice, frozen funds and loss of authentication require different responses. Follow the institution's legitimate process for the actual restriction while preparing an eligible payment alternative. A Swiss account does not override a legal freeze or put assets beyond every state's reach. If capital controls or state access concern you, focus on lawful access, accepted authority and usable reserves before a disruption, rather than a promise attached to a country name.
Swiss tax residence is not a day-count exemption
For federal direct tax, residence can arise when you live in Switzerland with the intention of remaining. A qualifying stay can separately arise after at least 30 days with gainful activity or 90 days without it; temporary interruptions do not simply restart that period. The tax obligation begins with the relevant residence or stay, not automatically on day 31 or 91. Personal attachment generally brings unlimited liability, with statutory exceptions including foreign businesses, permanent establishments and property.
Cantonal and municipal taxation must also be assessed. The actual municipality, income, wealth and overseas connections matter, and Zurich's municipal tax factor is not a rate for Nyon. A Swiss address does not itself end UK tax residence or settle a UAE departure position. Have the relevant advisers assess the real move and any continuing home, work or business responsibilities together.
If you also have a German tax connection
The Germany-Switzerland treaty is relevant only where that actual connection exists. Article 4 resolves dual residence through permanent home, centre of vital interests, habitual abode, nationality and, if needed, agreement between the authorities. Paragraph 3 preserves a special German taxing right despite Swiss treaty residence where a permanent home remains in Germany or habitual abode there reaches at least six months in the calendar year, subject to the specified exemption and credit rules.
Work, income and payments in detail
Paragraph 4 concerns Swiss-resident individuals without Swiss nationality who were subject to unlimited German tax liability for at least five years in total. Germany may continue to tax specified German income and assets in the last year of that liability and the following five years. Swiss taxation can remain applicable; the treaty provides a credit for Swiss tax against the defined additional German tax component, excluding trade tax. The paragraph has an exception for a move to genuine employment with an employer in which the person has no substantial economic interest beyond employment. These are not general rules for everyone moving from the UK or UAE.

Documents and preparation time
- Establish the route for each person. Use passports, existing Swiss permissions and relationship records. For a British acquired-rights case, retain the evidence of the right established before the end of 2020 and its continued validity. The result is a defined municipal or cantonal procedure rather than one assumed route for the family.
- Prepare the evidence for work or non-working residence. An EU/EFTA employee needs the written employment details; a self-employed person needs genuine-activity and livelihood evidence. A qualifying non-working household needs resources and suitable insurance. A third-country employee's admission application is the employer's task before work begins.
- Connect relatives to the home and receiving services. Organise relationship, dependency and parental-authority records, appropriate housing, school reports and insurance evidence. For continuing treatment or care, obtain the records the receiving provider needs in an accepted language.
- Use the correct deadlines. EU/EFTA registration is generally within 14 days of arrival and, for work, before starting. Authorised third-country non-working stays over three months with entry permission also require registration within 14 days. Visa requirements follow the actual passport and admission case. An exception from registration for already authorised short work is not an allowance to work without permission.
- Join the accepted arrangements into an arrival date. Coordinate the tenancy or required acquisition authorisation, bank acceptance, school allocation and care start. Arrange insurance on time, fund retrospective premiums, and then connect travel, handover and first appointments.
For third-country retirement admission in Zurich, the canton requests the entry application, passport copy, reasons and intended municipality, detailed personal connections to the canton, a written undertaking not to work and financing evidence. Applicants under 75 also need a home-country criminal-record extract with a certified German translation, or the stated alternative good-conduct document. Representation requires a power of attorney. Processing can take several months. This is Zurich's documented procedure, not an identical checklist for Vaud.

Ongoing obligations
A prepared option needs a named person to maintain it. Track the right itself, the document's expiry and the permitted absence separately. Under the standard FNIA rules, deregistration or a long absence can end the permission before the date printed on the card. A change of canton, employment or family circumstances calls for the relevant authority assessment.
- The home: rent, running costs, insurance and upkeep continue during absence. Agree keys, correspondence, heating, property checks and preparation before the next arrival.
- Family and care: a different school, medication, level of care or pension source can change the arrangement. Update the receiving service, insurance position and household responsibilities together.
- Banking and recovery: after changing address, phone or banking product, test the permitted sign-in, payment and recovery process. Another authorised person needs access accepted by the institution, not a shared password or an assumption that a family relationship is enough.
- Work and representation: identify who can make business decisions and pay family bills if the main decision-maker is unavailable. Personal work permission, actual working days and ongoing tax obligations remain separate tasks.

Practical preparation
EXOBASIS takes the Swiss option from a country choice into the work your household needs. We compare the agreed locations, organise residence records and necessary specialist input, and carry through commissioned housing, viewing, arrival and maintenance tasks. A property-purchase assignment can include independent local title and purchase checks, contract coordination, completion and handover.
You receive the results of the work actually done: the residence route being pursued, the contractual housing position, the arrangements for school and care, and the payment functions tested. Existing advisers and completed groundwork stay part of the plan. A document task, a banking transition or preparing a home can be commissioned directly.
Compare Portugal and Ireland for different reasons
Portugal as a personal alternative is a separate European family-home comparison. Establish any EU/EEA/Swiss entitlement or protected existing right before considering a new national route. Against Switzerland, compare the language, distance from your retained base and concrete care and housing arrangements. Portugal remains in Europe; choosing it is not the same decision as seeking geographical distance from a Europe-wide war scenario.
Ireland as a personal alternative offers an English-speaking European comparison. British citizens have a Common Travel Area starting point, while non-British family members need their own assessment. EU/EEA or Swiss citizens instead assess their own rights: for a longer stay, work or genuine self-employment can provide the basis, while a self-sufficient household needs adequate resources and comprehensive health insurance. For a UAE household, neither residence there nor one relative's passport settles everybody's route. Match housing and healthcare with island supply and air or sea access; Irish immigration is not simply UK immigration under another name.
Is a Swiss banking relationship enough for a family base?
No. A Swiss banking relationship can serve a payment or other financial purpose. A family base also needs the appropriate rights for every person, usable accommodation, the correct insurance and prepared school, treatment and any care arrangements. EXOBASIS can connect that work or handle the banking preparation as a separate assignment.
